Clergy often fall into the trap of mistaking obsession for passion. It usually results from the church dithering that precedes any action, combined with the placid acceptance of mediocrity following any action. Clergy conclude that the best way to get anything done is to do it yourself. Since they are usually in a quest for quality, every detail must be perfect. Since they are aware of how much needs to get done, every action is labelled "urgent". We find ourselves compulsively doing everything, overseeing everything, attending every meeting, responding to every request, with little sense of priority.

Frankly, it is very easy for us to fall into this trap. I have been advising Sessions to focus on visioning, mentoring, and modeling spiritual life ... and "let go" of micro-management. But in order for a Session to "let go", lay people as individuals and teams need to "step up" (in spiritual discipline, purposeful ministry, and volunteer commitment). What if they don't? Suddenly the clergy feel obliged to "step in" and do it all.

There is an outward and inward solution. Outwardly, clergy should encourage selective mediocrity and Sessions should live with some gaps. Every failure is an opportunity for a teaching moment. Allow mediocrity, but follow it up with more training. Better to allow gaps in ministry, than reinforce unhealthy staff dependency. Inwardly, leaders need to practice a better sense of humour. They need to see the irony in situations, and be able to laugh at themselves for imagining that they can be super-human.

Remember: obsession and compulsion are not the same as passion and productivity. Prayer can help you discern the difference.
